How long have you been involved with Clean Up the World?

I have been involved with Clean Up The World since 2003; uninterrupted.

What is the name of your group / organisation and what types of activities do you do?

The name of our organisation is Amigança; we promote events, campaigns, work for environmental and social education, and we also have the Programa Na Praia / On The Beach Program (that promotes sustainability in needy communities incentivising the recycling).

Where do you mostly carry out activities?

During those 15 years, we have been doing this campaigns at rivers, lakes, beaches, slopes, needy communities, train tracks, lagoons, beaches, forests, streets.

How does this help your local environment?

Thankfully, the populations and communities are talking more about the environment’s protection and the need to preserve it; they are worried about it. We implant the Cleaning system, with visual programming, with indicative and educational plates, trash baskets, informative cartoons, educational folders, incentivising collector cooperatives, etc.

Why did you get involved with Clean Up the World?

We come from Communications and TV areas (broadcaster – Hildon, and journalist – Anna), and we have seen at the ECO 92 the problems that world is passing by the over-trash that was discarded in the oceans, streets, beaches, rivers, lagoons, wrongly.

What motivates you to make a difference to the environment?

A: First of all, the legacy that we need to pass to our sons and grandsons. Because God has given to us a perfect nature, and we need to “fight” to maintain it preserved.

What do you think people need to understand about the planet?

People need to receive, urgently, information regarding emergency problems such as: global warming, changing climate, and to assimilate the importance to participate in periodical campaigns and face the current situation avoiding the use of disposable material. A big emergency today for instance, is the huge quantity of plastic in all oceans around the world (fishes are eating it, and as a result, we – human beings – are also absorbing plastic).

What would you say to someone considering taking action in their local community?

We would say that, daily, a person produces about one kilogram of trash. And that, sum with his / her neighborhood’s trashes, it represents a lot of lost money; and also, this pollutes the environment. Therefore, let’s give a hand. With this, we can raise the monthly income of each person, preserving the Environment, and also serving as an example for the future generations.
